Welcome Back

Welcome back for the last term of Year 5.

We have started our topic of the USA, which the children have shown a great interest in, and it’s great to see some of the imaginative flags that have been made over the half term holiday, including lego, lolly sticks, beads and loom bands.  Thank you to everyone involved.

The children are working in groups to research a particular state in America which will include finding out about the following features: the position of their state, the climate, the time zone, journey times, famous landmarks, and finding out all the interesting things to do there.  They will then work on persuading me to go there on holiday with my family so they must make sure there is something there for all of us to enjoy.

In maths, we will be focusing on time (including reading timetables), angles (which will include calculating, measuring and drawing angles), transformations (reflection and translation) and shape.  We will continue to practise our number skills and our multiplication tables using Times Tables Rockstars.

In Literacy, we will be studying the book ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar which is set in Texas, USA.

We have two important music performances coming up in the next few weeks:  The Key Stage 2 Music Festival at the Metrodome on Tuesday 19th June (10:30 – 12:00) and the Opera North Big Sing: World War 1 Concert at the Barnsley Civic on Tuesday 3rd July (6 pm – 7 pm). The children are working hard towards these and we had a very enjoyable rehearsal with the Opera North artists on Wednesday.
