Key Stage 2 Music Festival

Year 5 have been invited to play their brass instruments at the Key Stage 2 Music Festival on Tuesday 19th June in the Metrodome Arena, Barnsley. This is an excellent opportunity for children who have been learning to play a musical instrument as part of a whole class to celebrate their progress and achievements by taking part in a large scale event in a professional venue.

The children will be using public transport to get to and from the venue and will return to school for their lunch.  Don’t worry – the children won’t need to carry their instruments onto the bus!  All the instruments will be transported by Mr Swallow in his van.

The performance will start at 10.30am and last approximately 1 ½ hours.  The concert is open to the public with tickets on sale on the door for £2.50. We hope that you will be able to come and support the children with their performance.  A letter will be going out this week.

The Secret Garden

In class guided reading, we have been reading ‘The Secret Garden’ by Frances Hodgson Burnett, which is set in Yorkshire.  It has been great fun learning how to read, write and speak Yorkshire dialect.

The children’s writing has been amazing and many examples are on display inside our classroom.  They have described the moment when Mary first finds the secret garden.  Not only was their writing full of description, they have worked very hard to include many of the features that we have been learning in Literacy lessons, such as the following: the use of hyphens for compound adjectives; colons and semi-colons for lists; and dialect for speech.

We also have had great fun making our own shoe-box secret gardens.
